Located 16 km south of São Paulo, the Interlagos route has the particularity of fitting a maximum of development into a minimum space. It is a fast track with long straights and large constant radius corners, offering significant elevation changes. The Mergulho ramp leading to the pit straight is as steep as the Eau Rouge ravine in Spa.
As the condition of the runway deteriorated over the years, Interlagos was abandoned in favor of Jacarepagua.
F1 returned in 1990. The track length was halved, and the "S do Senna" downhill (named after the driver's death) cleverly avoided the old Retao to return to the Curva do Sol and take the old route in reverse direction to Curva do Laranja. In this way, the circuit retains its natural character and the races are usually lively
